Santo Domingo without traffic signs

In England, the authorities decided to remove the traffic signs around Exhibition Road in Kensington, including the stoplights as a 'psychological measure' to better traffic by stimulating drivers and pedestrians to interact within the intentional chaos. The authorities had already carried out the experiment in the town of Wilshire and it reduced the number of accidents by one third and the drivers recorded a 5% reduction in the speeds. The same experiment has been carried out in Holland, Sweden and Germany, and now, spontaneously, it is being done in Santo Domingo.
A sample of 826 traffic signs shows that 32.5% are damaged or not visible due to trees or other signs blocking the view. Along eight of the bus routes in Greater Santo Domingo, 53% of the signs have been 'vandalized, according to the AMET office. Along the 27 of February Avenue, of the 364 signs that should be there, only 250 remain. Beside outright thievery, corrosion from the salt air and the exhausts has affected many signs, and the installation of other signage has obscured the view of others. The Chinese demand for scrap metal is another cause of the vandalism.
According to the El Caribe newspaper, part of the problem is one of jurisdiction. The City Council, the AMET and the Public Works Ministry all are responsible for maintaining the signs.
