Primero, el maestro José Reyes había concebido la música de un canto, el himno a la patria. Pero faltaban las estrofas.
Así que invitó confidencialmente a Emilio Prud’Homme, su amigo, a escribir las letras. La gloria de producir un himno que arraigue en el corazón del pueblo era una especie de sueño.
El poeta hizo suyo el reto, y desde entonces empezó su lucha fervorosa por este ideal. Prud’Homme trabajaba lenta y cuidadosamente en la realización de su canto heroico. Cada verso era como una “destilación fragmentaria de su alma”, hasta que toda ella fue volcada en el producto final. Una vez escrito el Himno Nacional, se hizo su primera ejecución en público un dia como hoy 17 de agosto, 1883.
