Once in the Dominican Republic, I used a local pre-paid SIM for local calls...with out a data plan. Well, I rented a car, and took off like I knew where I was going! Powered up Locus free app on my Atrix...and within seconds, the GPS was tracking me and following me on the map. I knew exactly where I was, and where to go. WOW! Awesome. The GPS fix felt almost as fast as when I have internet available back in the states.
So why am I so happy...well a year before this trip I attempted a similar thing with my iPhone 3G. I downloaded a map application that would let me use it off line...But the GPS fixes were soooo sloooow it was unusable. I'm talking 25 minutes to get a fix...and even after the first fix, it had a very hard time to follow me on the map.
So I recommend the Motorola Atrix for offline GPS applications...it had me driving like a local!
And i also recommend the locus app. Although this week Google maps released a new version for offline use of their app, I will still buy the pro version of the Locus app...Just becase i'm greatful for their help. I think it is worth it!
